Autumn's Here, Time to Tidy up Your Garden.

As the leaves begin to turn golden brown and fall from the trees, your garden can begin to look very messy, so here are a few tips to help you tidy up your garden and get ready for winter.   Composting Autumn provides fantastic material for composting, such as grass cuttings and leaves, so you’ll be happy to know you can do something useful with the blanket of leaves covering your garden. You could choose to use them in your compost bin, however since leaves will take longer to compost than the rest of the contents of your compost bin, it’s much easier to use hessian leaf sacks. Simply fill the sacks up and leave them in a shady corner of your garden, when you come back in spring you should be met by a pile of nutritional leaf mould which will make a great base compost or fertiliser. After you’ve trimmed and removed any dead flowers from your plants put your garden waste to good use and put them in your compost bin. Compost bins are brilliant and are a must for all gardens, they help you cut down on the amount of waste you throw away, encourage you to recycle and save you money. As well as putting garden waste in your compost bin, you can use food waste such as vegetable peelings and some household waste, for example, newspaper and cardboard. Harvesting If you’ve been growing any apples, pears or berries, October is the latest you can really leave it to pick them. If you have a large amount of fruit to pick, or will struggle to reach the fruit, make it easier for yourself and use an apple picker, which is ideal for picking apples, pears and plums. October is also the time to harvest elderberries and raspberries, which again can be made much faster and easier with a berry picker.   Chimineas Now that you’ve tidied your garden up for winter, harvested your fruit and turned it into pies, jams or sauces, why not invite your friends and family round to enjoy your garden? While the autumn makes gardens look beautiful, the chill in the air can put you off venturing into the garden, so why not invest in a chiminea? Chimineas provide will provide your patio with heat, light and you can cook on them, what more could you need?   Bird Feeders It’s lovely to sit and look out into your garden in the winter and see bird visiting your garden.
