Bug Box

SKU: GDBB2

The Bug Box is an attractive dual chamber insect habitat which can be hung from trees, pergolas, hanging brackets, or near ponds or scented plants. It provides an over-wintering habitat for insects like Ladybirds (natural aphid predators) and a home for solitary bees (non-aggressive garden pollinators) and other beneficial insects during the summer.

Offering a variety of potential habitats, the top section is made of variable sized canes and the lower of bored solid timber. It is robustly screwed together and made from durable FSC timber with a roof of oak/acacia, or similar, which is naturally resistantThe habitat can be used by solitary bees like red mason and leaf cutter, which will fill the tubes with egg cells and also use the cavity as an over-night roost.

Ladybirds, caterpillars, earwigs and other insects will also use the chambers for refuge. If after 24 months the product has not been used, it may be worth choosing an alternative location to site it and/or look to see what improvements you can make to provide a suitable environment for your target species (flowers, woodpiles, rough areas of garden etc)

The product can be inspected at any time of year and if it has been used by insects like solitary bees, the bee cells should be visible. The solid timber construction of the habitat gives good protection against cold weather, but during harsh winters the Bug Box can be taken into a non-heated shed or garage for extra protection.

No external maintenance is required with this product.

These products are for wild creatures and as such, you should not expect immediate habitation. We suggest you carefully read the supplied instructions for siting and provide this product in a suitable habitat for the target species. The product can then be re-visited 6 - 12 months later, or in the appropriate season, to see if it is being used. Because many species of creature are constantly seeking refuge and safe nesting sites, you may find that an unexpected species is using your product - this is part of nature and all species should be welcomed as part of your wildlife garden.
