You may have noticed our website is looking a little different. Last week we carried out some changes to improve your experience on the site, to make it easier for you to use, and find the products you’re looking for.

The navigation throughout the website has been updated to include a ‘Home’ button so you can return to the homepage from any page within the site.

We’ve renamed some of our pages, updated the sliders and some of the graphics on the homepage to make it clear what products you’ll find in each section.

We have also added new helpful landing pages which fit better with our brands current offering, and provide you with useful information on; Practical Recycling, Sustainable Living, Garden & Wildlife, Garden Gifts and our Council Food Waste Schemes.

Due to the large amount of pet, birdcare and wildlife products we have added to the website over the past year, we decided it was time they had their own place in the website and have added the Pet & Wildlife category. There you will be able to find nesting boxes, bird feeders, pet products, insect houses, wasp traps, our brand new Pet Memorials range and any other pet or wildlife related products.

Over the past few months we have also added a large amount of ornamental animal figures to the website; which ranges from realistic hens and rabbits, to quirky meerkats to crazy owls.

Our animal figures have been really popular with our customers and as our range expanded we felt it was time they also had their own place within the website; you can now find all of our ornamental animal figures on the Ornamental Animal Gifts page.

We would like to thank The Marketing People for their assistance in the planning, organisation and for carrying out the changes and helping us to build a much more user friendly website.

While you’re looking around our new and improved website, don’t forget to take a look at our Eggcellent Easter Offers, which run from the 18th March until the 6th May.

Part of our proposition has always been to sell products which are sustainable and / or help people to recycle and live a more sustainable lifestyle.

We are currently involved in over 60 council food waste schemes up and down the country, supplying the liners and food waste bins to local retailers and selling them online to make it easier for people to take part in the scheme.

Recycling and sustainable living has been well adopted in the UK over the past few years and it’s hoped that the UK will become a zero-waste economy in the near future.

The Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA) found that approximately 43% of all household waste was recycled in 2011/12, up by more than 30% in comparison to 2000/01 when only 11% of all household waste was recycled.

Tips to help you live a more sustainable lifestyle

Not only is recycling and living a sustainable lifestyle a good thing to do for the environment, but it can also help you to save money, which is always nice.

Take a look at our tips to help you produce less household waste and live a more sustainable lifestyle.

Food Waste Schemes

Visit your council website to find out if they are running a food waste scheme in your area. If they are, find out what size liners and food waste bins you need and visit one of our local retailers in your area or visit our website for the best quality and best value for money Compostable and Biodegradable liners.

Composting

Begin composting some of your food and household waste and create a nice base fertiliser for your garden.

To get started, visit the Compost Bins section of our website to choose a compost bin. The best part is that our compost bins are environmentally friendly and are made from 100% recycled material.

Water Butts

While we may have seen plenty of rain over the winter, we may not later in the year and hosepipe bans may be enforced in certain parts of the country.

Whether your area is affected by hosepipe bans or not, you can save yourself some money by collecting rain water in a water butt and using that on your garden to keep your plants and vegetables looking beautiful.

Buy sustainable gifts and household items

Where you can buy sustainable gifts and household items, and better yet try to buy products which have recyclable packaging.

We know at certain points during the year it’s difficult to avoid excess packaging, such as Birthdays and Christmas.

Remember that not all councils will recycle wrapping paper, so make sure you check with them first.

There are also a number of household items you can buy which are recycled themselves, for example we sell a range of recycled glassware.

Visit our website to find out if we are working together with your council to help support your local food waste scheme and find out which liners and caddies you need to take part in the scheme.

Mother’s Day is approaching (for those of you who’ve forgotten it’s Sunday 10th March) and time left to shop and order your gifts is fast running out.

If you’ve ever asked your Mum what she wants, you’ll know by now her response is usually ‘I don’t want anything’, so trying to choose a gift for her can often be difficult.

Here at Gardening Delights we’ve put together a selection of practical Mother’s Day gifts your Mum will love and can use throughout the year.

With over 11 million liners sold, we’d like to say well done to all of you who are using compostable and biodegradable liners whether you’re taking part in a council food waste scheme or home composting.

Our customers constantly tell us that our biodegradable and compostable liners are the strongest and best quality liners they have used. Quite simply, we offer the best value and best quality for money; no one can produce liners for less and maintain the same high level of quality.

Council Food Waste Schemes

Over the past six years we’ve taken part in and supplied liners and caddies for over 70 council food waste schemes up and down the country.

In most food waste schemes we have found that our 7 and 10 litre liners are used for indoor food waste bins and caddies, and our 20 or 25 litre liners and caddies are used for collection by refuse crews.

If your council are running a food waste scheme, be sure to visit our website to get your compostable liners and food waste caddies.

We have found that our 7 litre compostable and biodegradable liner is by far the most popular, however we also sell larger liners including; 50 litre garden waste sacks and 140 and 240 litre compostable wheelie bin liners.

Composting

Even if your council aren’t running a food waste scheme you can use our biodegradable and compostable liners in your home compost bin.

You can use household waste such as cardboard and newspaper as well as food waste in your compost bin to create a base fertiliser. Not only will this save you money but it will also reduce the amount of food and household waste you are putting in your bin.

It’s important to remember that if you’re putting your food waste in your compost bin you must not put cooked food in your compost bin.

Got dogs?

If you’ve got dogs, why not do your part for the environment when you take your furry friends for a walk with our compostable and biodegradable dog waste bags.

Like our liners, our dog waste bags are made from corn starch and meaning they are 100% biodegradable and compostable.

Visit our website for the best value for money 100% compostable and biodegradable food waste bin liners and dog waste bags.

Thought about your New Years resolution yet?

An easy and cheap way to do this is to start using Compostable and Biodegradable liners which can be used for food waste, your general waste or for home composting.

Many councils run food waste schemes and our liners are suitable for most of these, so it may be worth finding out if your council is one of them.

Get your resolution off to a good start by ordering your liners now so they’re sat there ready and waiting for the 1st of January.

If you can’t wait until New Year, why not start early? We know what Christmas is like; you have parties and family come to visit and when it’s all over, you’re left with a houseful of wrapping paper, packaging and left over food, so you’ll certainly get some use out of them.

Take advantage of our special Christmas offer and buy a roll of 7 litre or 10 litre liners and get 20% extra free!

Over the weekend some of us will have woken up to see our cars white over with frost, a real sign that winter is truly on it’s way.

For many, that means preparing for Christmas, but don’t forget about the wild birds which visit your garden, who will suffer through the cold winter months.

Winter is a difficult time for wildlife, who may struggle to find food or water in freezing conditions, which is why it’s so important to give them a helping hand.

A news article from the BBC lists a garden bird survival plan from the RSPB, which looks at ways you can help wild birds through the winter.

“Garden Bird Survival Plan:

Put out feed regularly, especially in severe weather. Set up a bird table and use high-calorie seed mixes. This can also be used to put out kitchen scraps such as animal fats, grated cheese and porridge oats.

Put out hanging feeders for black sunflower seeds, sunflower hearts, sunflower-rich mixes or unsalted peanuts.

Ensure a supply of fresh water every day. If it is very cold use tepid water, but do not use any antifreeze products.

Put out fruit such as apples and pears for blackbirds, song thrushes and other members of the thrush family.

Food bars or fat hung up or rubbed into the bark of trees is great for treecreepers, goldcrests and many other species.

Put up nest boxes to provide roost sites for smaller birds. They will then be used for breeding later in the year.”

Source: BBC Norfolk: How to look after garden birds during the winter

Here at Gardening Delights we have an extensive range of birdcare products, such as bird feeders, bird dishes and nesting boxes.

Bird Feeders

We have a large selection of hanging bird feeders, which all come with a chain allowing you to securely attach it to something sturdy such as a tree, fence or a wall.

For the more creative amongst you, we also have a Build Your Own Bird Feeder Gift in a Tin, which would make a great gift for someone this Christmas.

Simply attach your bird feeder to something sturdy and fill it with food and then sit back and watch as birds flock to your garden.

Bird Boxes

We have a range of pretty and unusual bird boxes and bird houses which will not only provide somewhere snug for birds to nest, but brighten up your garden.

If you want to take care of feeding birds and providing them with a cosy home at the same time, we have an all in one Nesting Box and Bird Feeder, which features a nesting box in the upper part and a bird feeder in the lower part.

Helpful tips for bird box and bird feeder placement

As we mentioned in a blog post about bird boxes, feeders and bird houses earlier in the year, there are some things you need to take into consideration when placing your bird box or bird house.

Ensure they’re securely attached to a tree, wall or fence at least 1.5M off the ground, which will help to keep them safe from predators.

Make sure there’s nothing they could hit during high wind which may damage the feeder or house.

Clean bird feeders out regularly to keep your feathered friends safe from any harmful microbes or parasites.

Bird boxes and houses should be cleaned out at the end of each season, again to keep birds safe from microbes or parasites.

Visit our birdcare section to look at our selection of bird feeders, dishes and houses and start helping wild birds get through the winter.

We came across a really useful blog post on the BBC about what you should be doing in your garden, and when, during the autumn to protect it and prepare it for spring. “Early autumn Bring in tender plants … Continue reading →

We came across a really useful blog post on the BBC about what you should be doing in your garden, and when, during the autumn to protect it and prepare it for spring.

“Early autumn

Bring in tender plants under cover before the first frosts.

Plant or move evergreens and conifers, while the soil is still warm.

Plant spring bedding, such as wallflowers and polyanthus.

Plant spring bulbs

Mid autumn

Tidy perennials, removing dead stems but leaving seed-heads for birds to eat.

Plant deciduous trees, shrubs and climbers.

Lay new lawns, so long as soil is not too wet.

Batten down the hatches, ensuring nothing can blow about and cause damage on windy nights.

Late autumn

Plant shrubs, roses and hedging plants sold with bare roots.

Clear up fallen leaves and compost them.

Plant tulips and hyacinths.

Move deciduous trees and shrubs once they have lost their leaves.

Take hardwood cuttings from shrubs and roses. “

Source: Key Jobs for Autumn – BBC

Following these points should ensure that your garden escapes unscathed from the winter and means it will look beautiful during the spring.

Composting

Instead of simply composting fallen leaves, you might also consider using leaf sacks to turn them into leaf mould.

Simply stuff a hessian leaf sack with fallen leaves and leave the sack in a dry and dark corner of your garden.

When you return in spring, you should be greeted by a nice pile of leaf mulch which you can use as base compost and fertiliser.

After you’ve tidied your plants up, you’ll no doubt have some garden waste, so instead of putting it in the bin, why not compost it? Composting is a brilliant way of being more resourceful, as you can put food waste, garden waste and cardboard in your compost bin and receive a lovely nutritional base fertiliser at the end of it.

We’ve currently got a special offer on two of our smallest compost bins, so why not begin composting today?

Prevent damage in your garden

Perhaps one of the most important points is to ensure that nothing can blow around and cause damage to your garden and undo all your hard work. This might mean moving any garden furniture, such as tables, chairs, barbeques or chimineas into the garage or shed.

If you notice any damaged fence panels, replace them now before they are blown over in high wind and cause damage either yours or your neighbour’s gardens.

As well as securing things which could damage your plants, you might need to tie back some of your plants which could get damaged or blown over in high wind, one way of doing this is by using twine.

Brighten up your garden and feed the birds

It’s important not to forget about wild birds during the cold autumn and winter months when their natural food supplies may be low.

Simply placing a bird feeder or a bird dish in your garden, and keeping it well stocked and clean, can really help wild birds through the winter and get them in tip top condition for spring.

Visit our website to view our ranges of bird feeders, compost bins and gardening accessories to help you tidy up your garden this autumn.

While Christmas is still a couple of Months away, beat the last minute Christmas rush and take a look our seasonal selection, which contains great gifts for gardeners or lovers of unusual gifts.

As the leaves begin to turn golden brown and fall from the trees, your garden can begin to look very messy, so here are a few tips to help you tidy up your garden and get ready for winter.

Composting

Autumn provides fantastic material for composting, such as grass cuttings and leaves, so you’ll be happy to know you can do something useful with the blanket of leaves covering your garden.

You could choose to use them in your compost bin, however since leaves will take longer to compost than the rest of the contents of your compost bin, it’s much easier to use hessian leaf sacks.

Simply fill the sacks up and leave them in a shady corner of your garden, when you come back in spring you should be met by a pile of nutritional leaf mould which will make a great base compost or fertiliser.

After you’ve trimmed and removed any dead flowers from your plants put your garden waste to good use and put them in your compost bin.

Compost bins are brilliant and are a must for all gardens, they help you cut down on the amount of waste you throw away, encourage you to recycle and save you money.

As well as putting garden waste in your compost bin, you can use food waste such as vegetable peelings and some household waste, for example, newspaper and cardboard.

Harvesting

If you’ve been growing any apples, pears or berries, October is the latest you can really leave it to pick them.

If you have a large amount of fruit to pick, or will struggle to reach the fruit, make it easier for yourself and use an apple picker, which is ideal for picking apples, pears and plums.

October is also the time to harvest elderberries and raspberries, which again can be made much faster and easier with a berry picker.

Chimineas

Now that you’ve tidied your garden up for winter, harvested your fruit and turned it into pies, jams or sauces, why not invite your friends and family round to enjoy your garden?

While the autumn makes gardens look beautiful, the chill in the air can put you off venturing into the garden, so why not invest in a chiminea?
